Klopp has Champions League selection headache

|

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a tough decision to make regarding his Champions League squad for the rest of the season. The Reds have recently signed Cody Gakpo and with long-term injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, Gakpo is expected to get instantly integrated. In order to include Gakpo in the Champions League squad, Klopp will have to make room for one player by removing one existing player from those selected.

One option for Klopp is to include Stefan Bajcetic as a “List B” player, as he is under 21 and has been with the club for more than two years. This would allow Klopp to add another player to his roster. However, even with Bajcetic, Klopp will still need to make room for Gakpo, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are available. Potential omissions from Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League squad are goalkeeper Adrian and Arthur Melo.

Klopp has a difficult task ahead as he tries to put together a strong and competitive squad for the remainder of the Champions League season. Given the way the Premier League has gone for Klopp, the Champions League seems to be the only piece of silverware that can salvage his season.

Liverpool’s potential squad basis the squad that The Mirror expects is as follows.

Goalkeepers: Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher

Defenders: Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas, Calvin Ramsay, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold

Midfielders: Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Harvey Elliott

Attackers: Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho

List B players: Harvey Davies, Isaac Mabaya, Luke Chambers, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, Dominic Corness, Kaide Gordon, Melkamu Frauendorf
