According to a report from Italian news outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool target Victor Osimhen is ‘very close‘ to a Serie A move – dealing a potential blow to our hopes of landing the 18-goal striker who manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been ‘keen’ on signing.

Osimhen, scoring 13 in 25 Ligue 1 starts this season before the division’s postponement due to recent events, has been impressing some of Europe’s biggest clubs with his exploits – so much so that he even attracted Liverpool’s attention.

Should Liverpool sign Osimhen?

Indeed, as per the Daily Express, Klopp’s side were planning to step up their Osimhen pursuit before January – but now, with Napoli reportedly very close to acquiring his signature, the Reds face an uphill battle over the Nigerian.

La Gazzetta explain that Osimhen is currently in Italy undergoing negotiations to sign at the San Paolo Stadium, with the next few hours appearing ‘decisive‘ as Gennaro Gattuso’s side look to poach the 21-year-old from under Klopp’s nose.

Given Liverpool’s failure to capture Timo Werner, with Chelsea swooping in at the last minute, could Osimhen be a viable alternative if the Reds decide to step up their chase?

According to WhoScored, only star winger Mohamed Salah has averaged more shots per game this season than Osimhen – with the centre-forward also winning a superior amount of aerial duels compared to the entire Reds squad.

This could potentially highlight the fact Osimhen would be a noteworthy addition at Anfield, especially considering the fact Lille boss Christophe Galtier has claimed he is ‘like Aubameyang‘ – but we will have to act fast if Klopp truly wishes to beat Napoli in the race.
