After the successes of last season and the elation of lifting aloft the club’s first league title in 30 long years, the 2020/21 campaign will be unchartered territory for Liverpool.

What’s next?

Supporters far and wide will forever have the image embedded into their memories of where they were at that precise moment when Jordan Henderson raised the crown-topped trophy above his head, with his shuffle even making its way onto the famous video game Fortnite.

But that will not where manager Jurgen Klopp wants to end the story. With four years left on his current deal, the 53-year-old German tactician will be aiming to cement the Reds’ status at the pinnacle of English football.

Liverpool have not been in a position, since the Premier League era began in 1992, where they have had to retain their crown. But the words of his veteran star James Milner could inspire him to do just that.

Speaking to the club’s official website recently, the 34-year-old, who now has three titles to his name, insisted that the Reds cannot afford to lose their concentration, and infamously stated that if they go into next season at the same level, they will not be good enough.

Words of wisdom

These words should provide influence for Klopp to go out and improve his squad over the summer.

We know that the club does not need to spend millions of pounds in the transfer market to do so, as we have witnessed in recent years. But strength in depth must be a priority going into the new campaign.

Does Jurgen Klopp need to significantly strengthen the squad this summer?

Yes

No

No

Carrying out clever work in the transfer market with Michael Edwards and his team, along with focusing on youth development, could guide Klopp through this difficult time.

Liverpool are already bringing in the Olympiakos defender Kostas Tsimikas and have nurtured Curtis Jones superbly. Two players that could potentially break into the team in the near future.

Financial complications have maybe caused the Reds to shelve some of their transfer plans, but that doesn’t mean that the task is impossible.

It is simple. If Klopp listens to Milner’s remarks, he could do what only a few managers in Premier League history have managed to achieve.
