Liverpool 3-1 Southampton: Player Ratings

|

Liverpool’s clinical performance yesterday see them come away with all three points in a 3-1 win against Southampton at Anfield yesterday. Here’s how we think every player performed:

Alisson Becker- 9/10

In my opinion the Brazilian was caught in no man’s land a bit for the Southampton equaliser but didn’t receive much help from the defenders in front of him. However, Alisson made three world class saves in the second half to keep the Reds ahead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold- 8/10

A really solid performance from Trent, both defensively and offensively. Kept the Southampton wingers quiet for most the game as well as keeping the ball moving down the right hand-side with Harvey Elliott and Mohamed Salah.

Joe Gomez- 6/10

Another one to add to the mixed bag of performances put in by the defender this season. Didn’t track Che Adams on the visitors’ equaliser and some of his passing was still sloppy with him giving the ball away on numerous occasions.

Virgil Van Dijk- 7/10

Also, could’ve done a bit better on Southampton’s goal but kept the ball moving well and intercepted the ball on nearly every occasion possible. Was also unlucky not to find the back of the net on a few occasions.

Andy Robertson- 9/10

The Scotsman has been in great form since returning from injury, and he continued that against the Saints. Robertson assisted two of Liverpool’s goals, with the first coming from a free kick with Roberto Firmino flicking the ball home. The full-back then put in a delightful ball into the box for Darwin Nunez to smash home from close range.

Fabinho- 8/10

The Brazilian is certainly moving in the right direction in terms of his performances and was really good against Southampton. Making four successful tackles, twice as many as he has made in his last nine appearances before yesterday. The midfielder will now look to carry that form with him to Qatar at the World Cup for Brazil.

Thiago- 9/10

The Spaniard proved once again why his snub from the Spain squad is simply ridiculous. The number six completely ran the show constantly controlling the rhythm and tempo of the game with his magnificent range of passing. When Thiago plays well, Liverpool play well. It’s really that simple.

Harvey Elliott- 8.5/10

Elliott was almost untouchable in the first half, playing with such creativity and maturity for his age. His pass for Nunez’s first goal is magnificent. If that was De Bruyne and Haaland you wouldn’t hear the end of it. It’s a shame he didn’t quite start the second half with the same influence as the first or he would be in the running for Man of the Match for sure.

Mohamed Salah- 7/10

Possibly due to his own high standards, I thought Salah was reasonably quite today. His first touch and passing wasn’t quite at its usual level but still a good performance, nevertheless.

Roberto Firmino- 8/10

In a similar way to Thiago, Firmino proved why he should have been included in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup. His header from Robertson’s cross was perfect and the Brazilian linked up the front line phenomenally.

Darwin Nunez- 9/10 (Man of the Match)

It is mad to think how much Nunez has improved since his debut for the Reds. His overall game was fantastic today with his passing and first touch simply sublime. The striker also scored two goals, putting him on nine goals for Liverpool now and will look to score more for Uruguay at the World Cup.
