Last night saw Liverpool face defeat for the third time this season and for the first time at Anfield since April 2017, with Burnley running out 1-0 victors thanks to an 83rd minute penalty from Ashley Barnes.

Like most games this season, Liverpool started off the game on the front foot and dominated possession throughout the first half but still they failed to do much with the ball with chances few and far between – our most solid chance of the first half came when Divock Origi broke away from the Burnley defence and his shot rocketing off of the crossbar in what looked like a sure chance for a goal.

The second half saw a big improvement with chances coming Liverpool’s way but Burnley’s Nick Pope in great form during the game, making 6 saves throughout the game to. keep the Reds at bay – with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shot from the edge of the box requiring some impressive reactions from the Englishman and his quick reflexes also keeping out a stinger of a chance from Mo Salah.

It was an agonising result in the end for the Reds who still see themselves sat in fourth spot but now six points behind first-placed Manchester United.

Will Liverpool miss out on this season's Premier League title?

Despite the start and the possession, Liverpool have failed as of late to make an impact during games and have lost that spark going forward, with this now being the fourth game in a row in the Premier League where they have failed to score a goal. This is a stark contrast from the team that we’re used to seeing, including the team that managed to beat Crystal Palace 7-0 just over a month ago.

The confidence of the squad is evidently shot and I really can’t see how Jurgen Klopp is going to be able to turn things around. I initially had felt that the poor form had been down to defensive options and the reshuffle in the team’s system and set up but I think there is much more than that now – the mentality is just not there and we’re nowhere near the quality in front of goal that we have been in recent seasons.

Klopp even admitted in his post-match interview with Sky Sports that it was a game that was impossible for the Reds to lose, but somehow they did – with him accepting blame for the loss.

The result sets Liverpool up for a tough trip to Old Trafford on Sunday in the FA Cup tie with Manchester United and then another away day to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League with just a point between the two sides currently.
