Liverpool managed to sure up their defensive options on the last day of the January transfer window last week, with the club bringing in Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak to replace the injured Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip.

That hasn’t stopped other previous defensive targets from still being linked with a move to Merseyside, mainly due to Kabak joining the club on an initial six-month loan, with the Reds likely to spend bigger in the summer to strengthen our squad for next season after a tough campaign so far this time around.

Did Liverpool have a successful January window?

Yes

Yes

No

No

One of the names on top of the list of centre-backs and one who is reportedly keen on a move to the club is RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who according to Christian Falk, Head of Football for BILD Sport, Liverpool are one of three clubs that the French defender wants to join alongside Bayern Munich and Chelsea…

There is no denying Upamecano’s talent with the 22-year-old being one of the most sought after youngsters in Europe with plenty of clubs interested in getting his signature in the summer.

Liverpool will face some strong competition in Bayern and Chelsea both financially and with what the clubs can offer in regards to prospects and trophy aims. Bayern is a deadset opportunity to win trophies as they always have been and Chelsea is a team back on the up and with new boss Thomas Tuchel in charge, Upamecano has clearly seen that as a great opportunity now.

I think the decision over signing Upamecano will also depend on how good an impression Kabak can make during his six-months at Anfield – if the Turkish international impresses Klopp before the end of the season and more than shows his ability to contend in this Liverpool team and the Premier League, it would make sense for the club to want to trigger that £18 million option to buy in the summer.
