According to a report from the Daily Mail, as Liverpool continue to be heavily linked with Bundesliga midfielder Thiago Alcantara, a fellow German top-flight target has allegedly slipped under our nose as Chelsea look ‘set to sign‘ Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz.

Havertz, who has scored an impressive 12 goals in 29 Bundesliga starts from midfield, was reportedly at the centre of manager Jurgen Klopp’s interest as we looked to bolster the squad ahead of our Premier League title defence.

Is losing out on Havertz a huge blow to Liverpool?

Yes, undoubtedly

No, prefer Thiago

No, prefer Thiago

Indeed, Havertz stands at 6ft 2 and could even play as a forward despite being a natural attacking midfielder, similar in some respects to past target Timo Werner.

However, as we eventually lost out on Werner to Chelsea, it appears history is about to repeat itself with Havertz as the Mail explain.

Currently commanding a release clause of around £90 million, the west Londoners were apparently the only team willing to match that figure, with Liverpool opting not to heavily invest given the recent global pandemic.

Now, with Chelsea looking ‘set to sign‘ the attacker, Klopp may have to turn his attention to other targets who could help strengthen our grip on the top flight crown.

Thiago, who could provide another dimension in midfield, as has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield recently – with a report from Sport claiming that negotiations have been ‘very advanced’.

Whether or not we sign Thiago remains to be seen, but Liverpool’s latest transfer blow comes in the form of another target apparently on his way to the capital.
