According to a report courtesy of CBS Sports, Liverpool have reignited their chase for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie and are interested in signing the 21-year-old along with fellow Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Wolves and even arch rivals Everton.

McKennie, who burst on to the Bundesliga scene during the 2017/2018 campaign, going on to become a regularly featuring asset under ex-English top flight boss David Wagner, is now attracting Liverpool’s attention as we seemingly scour the market for midfield additions.

Should Liverpool sign McKennie?

Recently, the Reds have been touted with a swoop for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara, but now it appears we have also turned our attention to McKennie – who manager Jurgen Klopp has scouted before.

Back in early 2019, Klopp reportedly sent members of the Liverpool scouting set up to watch McKennie in action – pondering a potential coup for the USA international at the time.

Over a year after first displaying interest, according to CBS, Klopp has now seemingly come back around with Liverpool allegedly joining the hunt for his signature.

Schalke’s young prodigy is currently rated at around €25 million (£22.4 million) from an outside perspective, but it’s unclear what price the German club would be happy to sell at.

Described as ‘outstanding‘ by ex-Schalke boss and compatriot Christian Heidel, McKennie has now amassed 19 caps for his national side at just 21-years-old, potentially highlighting the fact he has enormous potential to succeed.

Whether or not we prioritise the youngster over Thiago remains to be seen, but it’s debatably clear there are some plus sides to a would-be coup.
