After Virgil van Dijk’s injury against Everton, many Reds fans felt the season could take a dark turn.

The Dutchman has become a commanding figure in Liverpool’s defence, being regarded as one of the best defenders in the world.

With the club being linked to a number of central defenders ahead of the January transfer window, it was becoming urgent that the club needed to fill the hole left in their defence, especially after further injuries to Joel Matip and Fabinho.

However, in steps 23-year-old Nathaniel Phillips – who made his league debut for the club against West Ham at the weekend in a 2-1 victory that put the Reds top of the table after game week 7, with Phillips winning Man of the Match for his performance. During the game, Phillips made 2 interceptions and made 9 clearances, as well as winning 5 aerial duels and averaging an 80.5% passing accuracy – clear statistics showing his quality against the Hammers.

His display showed that he is clearly of quality to play for Liverpool, and to become a valued member of the first team – especially given the injury list at the club which has left space for some of the younger stars at the club to make their way, and since Phillips’ loan to VfB Stuttgart last campaign, the Bolton born defender has clearly gained valuable experience that he has taken with him back to Merseyside.

This rise of Phillips into the first-team leaves the club with a big decision ahead of the winter transfer window, and although a defensive signing may still be needed, Phillips has earned his right to be a part of this Liverpool squad, and long may his form continue for the Reds.
