Last season saw the Reds win their first-ever Premier League title in history and their first top division title for 30 years in one of the finest seasons from a club in the history of the competition in my opinion with them totaling 99 points at the end of the campaign.

The aim was no doubt to retain that title again this season with the Reds favourites to win the league this season ahead of their competition with plenty of fans such as myself optimistic about back to back titles for Jurgen Klopp and his team.

However, the start to the current season hasn’t quite gone to plan with injuries to important first team players, most namely the club’s go-to central defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out for the remainder of the season – leaving the club with just one senior centre-back in Joel Matip, who is also currently sidelined after an injury on Sunday against Fulham, but is expected back in time for tomorrow’s game against Tottenham.

I fear that if the Reds don’t make any defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window in a few week’s time, they could miss out on their second Premier League title.

It may seem a big statement to make given the Reds’ start to the season despite the setbacks, with them currently joint-first in the league with Tottenham after 12 games – but the club can’t afford to leave their defensive options as bare as they currently are and will need to bring in another central defender to ensure the quality is as good as can be at the back.

The club have been linked with plenty of defensive talent over the past couple of months, with soon to be Champions League opponents RB Leipzig’s centre-back pairing of Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate both being linked with a move to the club.

No matter the case, I don’t doubt that the club will bring in a perfect option in defence given the success over the recent transfers for the club but it would be dangerous to our chances if the situation was to be ignored.
