Liverpool linked with move for £36m rated French defender

Liverpool have been linked with a move for £36 million rated French defender Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig, with the Reds also having been linked with his defensive partner Dayot Upamecano as of late.

The news comes from Head of Football and BILD Sport Christian Falk, who confirmed the news on Twitter initially over the Reds having Konaté on their transfer list ahead of December, with Football Transfer Tavern and the Liverpool Echo also reporting the news.

I think Konaté would be a great addition to the Liverpool defence especially with both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the long term. The Frenchman is 6 ft 3 and has great ability both aerially and with the ball at his feet.

This season in both the Bundesliga and Champions League, the 21-year-old has averaged 1.2 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, and 3 clearances. On top of this, he has averaged 3.6 aerials duels won per game and an 84.2% pass completion rate.

I haven’t seen too much of Konaté in the Bundesliga but I have seen him in the odd game in the Champions League both this season and last – and I certainly think he would be a good fit to a Jurgen Klopp defence.

Konaté is still young and has still plenty to learn from the game but with players such as Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip to learn from alongside Joe Gomez – but would cost a substantial amount if Klopp was to bring him to Merseyside.

The Frenchman is currently valued at £36.45 million according to Transfermarkt and would no doubt cost in excess of that but only time will tell if he is a player that the Reds will actually make a move for come the winter transfer window.
