Liverpool legend John Barnes has admitted that he isn’t convinced reported target Jadon Sancho would be a guaranteed starter for the Reds, should he make the move to Merseyside.

Speaking to BonusCodeBets via The Mirror, the Anfield icon confessed that Sancho would be making a mistake moving to Liverpool unless he is content with sitting on the bench and not playing every game, with the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah unlikely to lose their places in the starting XI if the English teenager was signed.

Bild reported earlier this month that Borussia Dortmund had ramped up the asking price for Sancho with Liverpool now in the race for the 19-year-old superstar, yet according to Barnes, the Reds will be an unsuitable destination for the teenage attacker if he is to progress in his career.

Do Liverpool need Jadon Sancho?

The former England international said: “If Jadon Sancho is willing to come to Liverpool and not play every week and sit on the bench, then absolutely he should come to Liverpool. But I always tell young players to be careful and play at a high level for four-five years before moving to a bigger club.

“I would advise Jadon Sancho to develop more and show that level of consistency before he is going to be put under a lot of pressure by being a £100m player playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Sancho will likely be one of the hottest players on the market in the summer transfer window, and whilst Liverpool have the funds to sign the attacker, Barnes hits the nail on the head as to why the youngster shouldn’t join the Reds.

While Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have a great record of developing good players into some of the world’s finest such as the aforementioned Salah and Mane, Sancho will find it difficult to play week-in, week-out with two world-class wingers already in the squad. And for the sake of his promising career, the Dortmund star will be better off moving to another club where first-team football will be guaranteed.
