With Liverpool out of this season’s Champions League, they could still yet benefit financially from this season’s competition.

What’s the latest?

The Reds were eliminated from the tournament that they managed to win the sixth time in 2019, bowing out at the hands of the La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

Despite this, the Merseysiders can still benefit from whoever eventually lifts the European Cup this season. Philippe Coutinho left Anfield in 2018 to join Barcelona for an eye-watering £142m transfer fee.

The move turned out to be a disaster and has since been loaned out to the Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 campaign.

On Friday, both sides faced off in the Champions League quarter-final, in which the Bavarian outfit triumphed 8-2 against the Catalan giants in staggering fashion. Coutinho himself coming off the bench and scoring a brace late on.

According to the Mirror, if Bayern end up winning this season’s competition, Barcelona will have to pay Liverpool £4.5m, which is part of a bonus package in his contract.

The report adds that the Reds orchestrated several add-on clauses in his deal that involve the club receiving a seven-figure sum should Coutinho go all the way in the Champions League.

Smart business

While sporting director Michael Edwards gets plenty of credit, and rightly so, for the work that he carries out behind the scenes at Anfield, this is another example of just that.

Back in 2018, Coutinho was arguably the club’s best player and was just before Mohamed Salah began to flourish in the famous red shirt.

So Edwards wanted to cover all of the basis of the Brazil international went on to do great things with Barcelona. Granted, he might not have been expecting him to be playing for another top club so soon.

The fact that Liverpool have the opportunity to continuously profit over a deal that took place two years ago, is an inspired piece of business from Liverpool.
