Liverpool have taken a surprise interest in the Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger as they look to bring him to Anfield this summer, according to reports.

What’s the word?

The 27-year-old has been in and out of Frank Lampard’s side during the past campaign and recognised as a rotational player for the Blues.

During the last campaign, Rudiger scored twice from 19 Premier League starts and 28 appearances in all competitions overall.

With no new contract on the table at this time, the Germany international could be surplus to requirements as Chelsea continue trying to play catchup with Jurgen Klopp’s side, having already added left-back Kostas Tsimikas to his team for the 2020/21 campaign.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the German tactician has taken an interest in the defender, with the Daily Mail claiming that there is “little movement” in terms of a new deal materialising in the country’s capital.

The report adds that the Reds are keen to bring in Rudiger to replace Dejan Lovren, who recently made the move to the Russian side Zenit St Petersburg for £10.9m after a six-year stay at Anfield.

Clever scouting once again

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and his team have received plenty of praise over the years after pulling off some outstanding buys for Klopp and his team, and bringing in the Blues centre-back could be another touch of genius.

Having won the Europa League and FA Cup with the Blues, the 6 ft 2 backmarker knows what it takes to win. Being a German speaker and a Berlin boy, he would be yet another player that would settle in quickly with the Liverpool squad.

With only three established centre-backs at the club with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, injuries are a real concern that Klopp needs to cover if they are to stand any chance of retaining their Premier League title.

Once more, this is a great example of potentially smart business, clever player tracking and an experienced player at a possibly discounted price.
