Salah leads Liverpool to a win in Premier League return

|

Liverpool secured a solid 3-1 away win as they defeated Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and a first senior goal from Stefan Bajcetic was enough to see the Reds take all three points from the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s men started the much brighter out of the two sides, with striker Darwin Nunez having a couple of half chances in the opening few minutes.

The first goal of the game came as Trent Alexander-Arnold played a sublime ball with the outside of his foot to find Andy Robertson in the penalty area, who squared the ball to Salah to tap home from close range.

Villa forward, Ollie Watkins, found space a few times in the box but couldn’t make any chances count.

Liverpool were largely in control in the first half and were rewarded with a two goal lead as Van Dijk slammed the ball into the bottom corner from a corner kick.

Despite being 2-0 up at the break, the Reds struggled to get any control on the game at the start of the second half.

First of all, Watkins had a goal disallowed for offside as he pierced through the Liverpool defense.

A few minutes later, Watkins did find the back 0f the net as he headed home past Alisson Becker.

Klopp made a few changes which particularly seemed to help proceedings with youngsters Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak replacing Jordan Henderson, Darwin Nunez and Thiago Alcantara.

It was Bajcetic who grabbed his first senior goal as he coolly chipped the ball over the keeper before slotting the ball between Tyrone Mings’ legs on the line.

After not having a single league away win for the first three months of the season, Liverpool now have back to back away wins in the Premier League after defeating Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Klopp’s focus will now turn to the challenge of facing Leicester City on Friday night, looking to increase pressure on former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers after their 3-0 loss at home to Newcastle United earlier today.
