Top 10 Most expensive Liverpool signings under FSG

|

With the current ongoing debates over Liverpool’s owners, we are going to look at the ten most expensive transfers made by Fenway Sports Group since buying the club back in 2010.

10. Sadio Mane (£35million)

The Senegalese forward joined the Reds in 2016 and at the time many questioned the fee paid for the winger. Mane went on to prove the deal was an absolute bargain, scoring 120 goals in 269 appearances under Jurgen Klopp, winning every tophy possible and also won the golden boot in the 18/19 Premier League season. Even after six years of service on Merseyside, Liverpool made a profit selling the 30-year-old to Bayern Munich for £45million.

9. Mohamed Salah (£36million)

Possibly the best signing under FSG, the Egyptian King has gone on to become an all-time great on Merseyside. Sitting on 170 goals and 63 assists in 275 games for Liverpool. Like Mane, Salah has won everything possible, became Liverpool’s top goal scorer in their Champions League history. The forward has also picked up individual honours such as three premier league golden boots and two Premier League player of the year’s just to name a few.

8. Luis Diaz (£37.5million)

The Colombian joined the Reds from Porto in January 2022 and has been superb ever since. His numbers may not be the greatest, 10 goals and 6 assists in 38 appearances, but the flair and work rate he provides the team is irreplaceable.

7. Diogo Jota (£40million)

The Portuguese forward may not have hit the heights of Mo Salah or Sadio Mane just yet but has still been a very savvy piece of business by FSG to bring him to the club. Since joining in 2020, Jota has scored 34 goals in 93 appearances for the Reds and contributed massively to Liverpool’s domestic double last season.

6. Fabinho (£40.5million)

Another example of great business from FSG. Obviously £40million isn’t cheap but in today’s market, Fabinho has proven to be a great signing. Despite his recent poor form, Fabinho has been consistently fantastic over the past few seasons and much of Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have been possible without the Brazilian.

5. Christian Benteke (£41million)

Perhaps the main “flop” on this list, the Belgian joined the Reds from Aston Villa in 2015. Perhaps the striker deserved more of a chance, scoring ten goals in 40 appearances for the Reds in a very poor side. His most memorable moment was his bicycle kick goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford- however Klopp’s side did lose that game 3-1.

4. Naby Keita (£54million)

Very similar to Benteke in the fact that he hasn’t hit the expectations set when he first signed. The only difference is Keita has had plenty more time to prove his worth, but just hasn’t been able to. Spending more time in the physio’s room than on the training ground, it’s hard to claim his Liverpool career has been a success.

3. Alisson Becker (£56million)

Another transfer that could be claimed as FSG’s best signing, Alisson arrived as the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the game and the keeper has lived up to the hype. Under contract until 2027, Alisson could undoubtedly become an even bigger Liverpool legend than he already is. Clean sheets, distribution, goals, assists, what can’t Alisson Becker do?

2. Virgil Van Dijk (£75million)

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool signed Van Dijk from Southampton for a whopping £75million in January 2018. Given the fact that Manchester United signed Harry Maguire for £85million just one year later, this deal was a major coup for Klopp. The Dutchman has become the best defender in the world, not being dribbled past for over a whole calendar year and pushing the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to their limits in the Balon D’or.

1. Darwin Nunez (£85million)

The 23-year-old joined the Reds from Benfica in the summer, becoming Liverpool’s most expensive player of all time. Nunez had a rough start to his Liverpool career, getting sent off on his home debut against Crystal Palace. However, Nunez has improved drastically since then, and Klopp looks to have a serious player on his hands.
