Former Liverpool forward Nicholas Anelka has warned Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah not to make the same mistake as he did during his playing days.

As a 19-year-old, the former France international captured a Premiership and FA Cup double and only just missed out on the Golden Boot with Arsenal.

Instead of sticking around at Highbury, Anelka opted to move to Real Madrid for £22.3m in 1999 and failed to live up to his hype.

Anelka would later come and represent Liverpool on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in 2001, scoring just four times during the 2001/02 campaign.

Speaking with the Liverpool Echo, Anelka pleaded with the trio to not make the same mistake as he did and jump ship to another club.

“It’s an amazing front three,” he said. “I love them all, especially Roberto Firmino because he is the key for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s success.

“Salah and Mane are ranking in the top five best players in the world right now. They have the quality to play for Real Madrid.

“But today Liverpool can compete with Real Madrid so they don’t need to move. Liverpool is very much the place to be.”

Both Mane and Salah have been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively in recent years as the Spanish giants, once again, try to prize Liverpool’s key assets away from them.

The advice from the Reds’ former No. 9 is sensible advice and proves that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Madrid winger Eden Hazard has proved this, admitting that his first season in the Spanish capital has been the worst of his career despite winning the La Liga title.
