Former Red, Xabi Alonso, has been appointed as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga [Bundesliga].

The 40-year-old was confirmed the new Leverkusen head coach on Wednesday afternoon following their 2-0 defeat to FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Alonso made 210 appearances for the Reds, winning the FA Cup and the Champions League during his spell on Merseyside and also winning two European Championships and a World Cup with Spain consecutively.

The silky Spaniard also featured in Liverpool Legends’ victory over Manchester United Legends in September.

The former playmaker has been looking for a club after his spell as Real Sociedad B head coach, with Leverkusen being his first top-flight job.

Bayer Leverkusen currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga with only one win from their opening eight games and also sit 2nd in Group B of the Champions League with one win out of three.

The BayArena will no doubt be looking forward to welcoming Xabi Alonso as they face Schalke at the weekend.

Alonso will certainly have a difficult task ahead of him to turn things around at Leverkusen, but will have players such as Patrick Schick, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Moussa Diaby at his disposal.
