This season has been a difficult one to comprehend not just for Liverpool fans, but Liverpool players alike. The Reds have had a tough start to the current campaign with a mixed bag of results yet still find themselves top of the Premier League table.
Our recent run of results have led to questions over the team’s ability to be able to retain the Premier League title this season and after our 1-0 loss to Southampton last night, former Liverpool defender and club legend Jamie Carragher aired his thoughts on the situation on Monday Night Football after the game…

As frustrating as it is, Carragher is right and I agree that if Liverpool doesn’t make a defensive signing during the current winter window, then it could massively harm their efforts in retaining the Premier League after the season-long injuries of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have effected more than just the defence.

Due to the pair’s injuries, this has led to defensive midfielder Fabinho having to play at centre-back and with Joel Matip now injured too, last night saw Jordan Henderson join him there – meaning the two usual first-choice midfielders are having to play out of position and this has led to an imbalance in the rest of the squad that is clearly impacting our performance all over the pitch.
Carragher is right in his assessment and if the club doesn’t act swiftly to address the problem in defence and return some balance to the squad, then we will be looking at a tough season with teams breathing down our necks to take the Premier League title from us.
