This season has seen one of the worst injury crises’ in the club’s history, with first-choice defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the majority of the season since at least October and a total of 19 separate injuries so far this campaign.

Along with the injuries to our defence, this has seen a drop in form and a reshuffle in other areas of the pitch with defensive midfielder Fabinho being pulled away from midfield to play at centre-back, along with Jordan Henderson in our last game against Southampton – which has led to usual balance of the squad being disturbed and this has had a clear knock-on effect in other areas of the pitch.

There has been a lot of discussion as to whether the Reds will need to make a signing this January in defence to try and relieve the stress and problems created by the absence of all three of our senior centre-backs – however, this has highlighted a big issue within the Reds squad that may prevent them from doing so.

In a recent article from The Express, it was highlighted that the Reds currently don’t have enough room for a foreign player to join the ranks and that it will have to be a homegrown option if the club were to make a signing this month.

This is due to the Premier League rule that a maximum of 17 foreign players can make your 25 man squad each season, with the rest having to qualify as homegrown talent, in other words, be either English or have played in the country at a young enough age to be classed as homegrown after so many years in the country.

Meaning that if Liverpool are to sign someone this January, then one of the foreign players in the squad will have to go the other way…

What do you think Liverpool fans, will we make a defensive signing this month? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
