We often hear of the players that could have been at the club, those nearly signings that were close to becoming a Red but were pitched at the post last minute by other clubs, or simply the deals just fell through – much like the incredible story of when Liverpool almost signed Cristiano Ronaldo if it wasn’t for his wages.

Although maybe not on the level of the Portuguese five-time Ballon d’Or winner, one player has recently opened up on his opportunity to sign for the Reds back in 2018 – and that is Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

In a recent interview with The Athletic (via the Liverpool Echo), Goretzka opened up about his opportunity to play for Liverpool after his contract ended with Schalke two years ago.

The inevitable link with the move would have obviously been manager Jurgen Klopp, with Goretzka very complimentary of the German and what he has done with Liverpool, with Klopp also being keen back in 2018 to bring the midfielder to the club.

What a move that could have been – Goretzka has enjoyed great growth in his career since joining the German giants, winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, Champions League, German Super Cup, and UEFA Super Cup with Munich over the past two years and has developed into a powerhouse midfielder with a cute pass and an eye for goal.

This season in the Bundesliga, Goretzka has established himself in that No.8 role for Bayern, averaging 2.2 tackles and 2 interceptions per game, as well as getting 1 goal and 2 assists to his name along the way.

Although the move never really materialised, it would have been great having the German in the Reds midfield with his talent indisputable.
