With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Reds have been linked with a myriad of defensive talent from across Europe, with one of the latest being RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konaté – who was linked with a move to the Reds over fellow defensive partner Dayot Upamecano.

The latest rumour doing the rounds is that of Inter Milan’s £54 million rated Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool by FC Inter News.

Liverpool have supposedly been in contact with de Vrij’s agent Mino Raiola over his availability and I can understand why, with the Dutchman proving to be a great leader for Inter and has shown his defensive qualities in Italy with both Lazio and now with his current club.

Who should Liverpool sign in January?

This season in Serie A, de Vrij has averaged 1.3 interceptions, 3.1 clearances, and 1.2 aerial duels won per game – on top of this the 28-year-old has a great range of passing and his ability on the ball is something that will suit Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s style down to the ground.

In the league again this season, de Vrij has averaged a 92.3% pass success rate with 51.7 passes per game from defense, a fine haul for Antonio Conte’s side.

I think he would be a great fit for the Reds compared to some of the defensive options out there in Europe, as well as the fact he could be paired up with fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk when he returns from injury.

de Vrij joined Inter on a free transfer from Lazio in 2018 and since then his market value has continued to rise with it currently peaked at £54 million – which the Reds would have to pay in excess of if they were to make a move for the defender in January.

No matter the case, it is important that the club make a move for a central defender next month – as I feel it could harm their chances of retaining the Premier League title this season.
