Liverpool knocked out by Man City in five goal thriller

|

Liverpool have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah, either side of half-time wasn’t enough to see the Reds progress as Jurgen Klopp’s defensive woes continued.

City named a stronger lineup on paper and their quality didn’t take long to shine, with Kevin De Bruyne putting a delightful cross into the box for who other than Erling Haaland to get on the wrong side of Joel Matip before putting the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool responded just before half-time as Carvalho neatly slotted the ball past Ortega from a clever ball into the box from James Milner.

Just two minutes into the second half, Riyad Mahrez put the home side back ahead with a sensational first touch followed by a sublime finish into the bottom corner.

Less than 60 seconds later, Darwin Nunez was breaking away from his man down the left hand side before tapping the ball into the path of Mohamed Salah who simply passed the ball into an empty net to level the scoring.

The Reds couldn’t quite hold on to the game, with De Bruyne putting yet another world-class cross into the box with Nathan Ake this time heading home to set the Citizens on their way to victory.

The result leaves Liverpool out of the competition, unable to retain the title they worked hard to win last season.

Jurgen Klopp will now turn his focus onto the challenge of Aston Villa in their first game back in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
