This season has proven tough for Jurgen Klopp and his squad, with Liverpool fans having to endure injury after injury to some of our best players just weeks into the current season.

First-team names such as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Thiago, Joel Matip, Fabinho, and Alisson just to name a few were injured within the first few weeks of the current season, with defensive pairing van Dijk and Gomez still sidelined and not likely to make a return before the end of the current campaign.

One of those names in the list has also found himself on the injury list again and that is Cameroonian defender Joel Matip, who has picked up two injuries already this season and was most recently sidelined during our 1-1 draw with West Brom back in December.

Initial thoughts were that Matip would be out of action for around 3 weeks, meaning he missed out previous two games against Southampton and Aston Villa, as well as our soon-to-be games against Manchester United and Burnley.

However, according to The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce on their ‘The Red Agenda’ podcast, that Matip will likely make his return way ahead of schedule and will likely be available for selection for our must-win game against United on the 17th January.

The news is fantastic for both Jurgen Klopp and the squad, who have been weakened in defence for much of the current season and will need as much depth and talent in that department as possible with the current situation with the Premier League table. Liverpool are currently top of the league with 33 points but are only ahead of second-place United on goal difference, with the Red Devils also on 33 points so far this season.

What do you think Liverpool fans, does Joel Matip’s return mean good news for the Reds? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
