The Reds lost out 2-0 last night against Atalanta in their fourth Champions League group game of the competition, failing to secure early qualification ahead of a busy month of fixtures.

Reaction on Twitter was quick as usual, with Liverpool and The Athletic journalist James Pearce sharing his verdict on the club’s poor performance against the Italians with his quick yet concise summary…

Pearce is spot on once again – Jurgen Klopp opted for some interesting changes, starting Divock Origi up front alongside Sadio ManĂ© and Mo Salah, with the Egyptian winger also being a surprise to me having only recently returned to training after an illness.

The team were poor all over the pitch for the whole of the game, failing to really make any impact and struggling to break down an Atalanta side that looked a world away from the team that the Reds thumped 5-0 last time out in Italy.

I’m amazed that the Reds failed to register a single shot on target throughout the game especially given the goalscoring prowess of the side over recent weeks – with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino also failing to make an impact on the side after coming on with around half an hour left to play.

I feel the changes to the squad were what let down the side in the end, with a squad that hasn’t featured together too much and another centre-back partnership that hasn’t played together before. The two full-backs are a world away from the usual quality I expect from Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the pair of Neco Williams and Kostas Tsimikas not making anywhere near the impact that the aforementioned pair do in attack.

The Reds face Brighton at the weekend in the Premier League and will hope to return to winning ways.
