The January transfer window is fast approaching and the Reds have found themselves in an injury crisis in defence, with both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out injured for the majority of the campaign.

With that comes the transfer links and rumours, with one of the latest being a surprise in the name of Olympiacos’ Portuguese centre-back Rúben Semedo.

The defender joined the Greek club back in 2019 from Villarreal for £4.05 million and has impressed after a year and a half at the club.

In the Champions League this season, Semedo has averaged 1 tackle, 1.7 interceptions, 3 clearances, and 2.3 aerial duels won per game and in the Greek Super League has only conceded one goal in 5 appearances. The defender also appears to be comfortable when in possession and with the ball at his feet, with an 89.1% pass success rate.

I haven’t seen Semedo play so it would be unfair to give a judgment over his ability or how well he may or may not fit into this Liverpool side but what I can say is that his stats look rather good.

His ex-teammate Kostas Tsimikas also joined the Reds this summer fro Olympiacos for £12 million, meaning the pair would settle in well together alongside a Liverpool side that also boasts Portuguese new boy Diogo Jota as well – plenty of individuals to help ease Semedo in if the Reds were to make a move for the defender in the winter.

With a current market value of £6.30 million, Semedo would be a cheaper option compared to some of the other players that the Reds have been linked too such as Dayot Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, and Ozan Kabak.
