With Liverpool still without their first choice defensive pairing in Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, with the pair likely to be out for the remainder of the season, the club has been heavily linked with a move for a centre-back in this January transfer window.
Plenty of names have been thrown in the ring with some great young talent linked with a move to Merseyside, however, one of the recent rumours has come as a bit of a surprise to me – with reports from transfer guru and football journalist Fabrizio Romano on his Here We Go podcast stating that Liverpool had been offered the chance to sign Arsenal and former Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The Greek international once played under Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund and was a great defender for the German, helping to win the back to back German Super Cup titles during his time at the club – but his time at Arsenal hasn’t quite lived up to expectation.
“He was offered to Liverpool too, you know that? Liverpool were looking for an opportunity and he was offered to Liverpool, but at the moment he’s not an option.”
As much as I think the Reds need further defensive cover with only one senior centre-back currently at the club and Brazilian midfielder Fabinho having to play in defence, I don’t think Sokratis is the answer given his rocky time in the Premier League with the London club.
The Reds is in dire need of either a short-term fix or a long-term solution but either way, a defensive signing needs to be made. Jurgen Klopp himself was unsure as to whether the club would make any signing at all this month with the club’s stance on waiting until the summer to ensure they don’t make a rash decision and sign the wrong type of player in a rush to plug a whole.
