It is becoming clearer as the days go by that this will likely be Georginio Wijnaldum’s last season in a Liverpool shirt, with the Dutchman looking set to complete the switch to Catalan club Barcelona this summer.

With this comes the agonising prospect of having to replace one of the club’s best midfielders over the past four years since leaving Tyneside for Merseyside – and there have been a few impressive names thrown into the mix.

The likes of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Lille’s Renato Sanches have all been linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as a potential Wijnaldum replacement but for me, there is one player that seems to be slipping under the radar and I am surprised there aren’t more clubs fighting for his signature.

Who is our best midfielder?

Since joining Leicester City from Monaco in 2019, Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League in my opinion, and would be a perfect replacement for Wijnaldum in the summer if the Dutchman does depart.

The 23-year-old currently has 4 goals and 2 assists from central midfield in the Premier League this season and is a great box-to-box midfielder with his defensive side of his game also very impressive with him averaging 1.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, and only being dribbled past 1.8 times per game.

When you look at how Liverpool’s midfield operates and the way Wijnaldum functions for the Reds then it is clear that Teielemans would be a worthy successor in Klopp’s midfield and could operate really well alongside the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Thiago.

Tielemans wouldn’t come cheap, however, with a current market value of £45 million according to Transfermarkt, a deal to sign the midfielder would likely be in excess of £60 million.

What do you think Liverpool fans, would Youri Tielemans be a good fit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
