It has been a long-growing transfer saga over the last few months but it seems more and more likely each day that Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will be leaving the Reds in the summer.

Having been heavily linked with a number of European club’s, it appears as though the guaranteed destination in the summer for the Dutchman will be Barcelona with current manager Ronald Koeman growing a good relationship with Wijnaldum after his time as Netherlands manager – with him reportedly confident in securing the midfielder’s signature.

After recent reports suggested that Wijnaldum has agreed on a contract with the Catalan club to join them in the summer, it appears as though the club have become ‘increasingly resigned’ to losing him at the end of the season, with him making it clear that he won’t sign the club’s offer which has been on the table since last summer according to David Maddock of the Daily Mirror, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter…

I have become used to the fact that Wijnaldum will likely leave in the summer and even though the prospect has become common knowledge now, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that I don’t want him to leave the club given what he has done during his four and a half years at the club.

The offer that the club has put down for the Dutchman is clearly not representative of his efforts and progress for us over the last few years with the club reportedly setting strict financial restrictions on contracts for players when they reach the age of 30 and over.

When and if Gini leaves in the summer, which he most likely will now, it will be a huge loss for the club and this summer will no doubt see them replace him in the market.
