The current campaign hasn’t been without its shortfalls – with long-term injuries to key players such as Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez and now our only other senior centre-back Joel Matip out for the following few weeks, it has put the club in a tough position with a lack of options at the back.

This concern has led to plenty of speculation over a transfer this month, with numerous talent across Europe being linked with a move to the Reds with the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, Ozan Kabak, Perr Schuurs, and David Alaba just to name a few.

However, The Atheltic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce recently highlighted the most effective option for the Reds this January which will help to solve more than just our issues in defence…

As quoted by AnfieldWatch on Twitter, Pearce stated how Liverpool will need to buy a specialist centre-back this month to solve their issues at the back, with midfielders such as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson being used in defence has led to an imbalance int he squad.

If a specialist defender is signed, this would alleviate the pressure on Fabinho and Henderson as they will be able to return to their preferred positions in midfield which will help to return the form and flow of the Liverpool squad that has been missing as of late.

I agree that the club will need to make a signing this winter despite Jurgen Klopp’s admittance that he was unsure whether this will be possible for the club – the strain of our lack of defenders has impacted the whole squad and recent form has been poor compared to the standards that we have been used to over recent years.
